Montgommery (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Montgommery was a family of the Norman aristocracy, named after their estate Montgommery near Vimoutiers (now Sainte-Foy-de-Montgommery and Saint-Germain-de-Montgommery ).

Roger de Montgomerie took part in the conquest of England and was named Earl of Shrewsbury . However, his descendants had to leave England again, they settled (again) in France and Scotland . In France they inherited the counties of Marche (sold in 1177), Ponthieu and Alençon . The family died out in France in the 15th century. The Scottish branch still exists today. The most famous member of the family today, Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery , also comes from here .
