Taillefer (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taillefer is a family of French nobility who ruled the county of Angoulême from the end of the 9th century until its extinction in 1246 and the county of Périgord until 975 .

history

The family presumably descends from the Gerhardiners in a female line and thus belonged to the inner circle of the Carolingian ruling class. Count Wulfgrin I was appointed by Charles the Bald and recorded in 868 as Comes Engolismi . Wulfgrin's grandson Guillaume II was called "Sector Ferri" (iron cutter), the French translation of which Taillefer became the epithet of some of the subsequent counts and then the name of the family.

The best-known family member is also the last: Isabella von Angoulême , heir to Count Aymar Taillefer and the second wife of King Johann Ohneland , the mother of King Henry III of England . and the German King Richard of Cornwall . The county, however, was passed on to the children of their second marriage, inherited by Hugo X of Lusignan .
