William VI. (Angoulême)
William VI. Taillefer (French: Guillaume Taillefer ; † August 7, 1179 in Messina ) was a Count of Angoulême from the House of Taillefer . He was a son of Count Vulgrin II and the Pontia of La Marche.
He was married twice. His first wife was Emma, daughter of Vice Count Adémar II of Limoges and former wife of Duke Wilhelm X of Aquitaine . He married her after the Duke's death in 1137 and had no children from her. His second wife was Margarete, daughter of Vice Count Raimund I of Turenne and widow of Vice Count Adémar IV of Limoges . He had several children with her:
- Vulgrin III. († 1181), Count of Angoulême
- Wilhelm VII Taillefer († before 1186), Count of Angoulême
- Aymar († 1202), Count of Angoulême
- Almodis (†?)
- 1. ∞ with Amanieu IV of Albret ( House Albret )
- 2. ∞ with Bernard III. Vice Count von Brosse
- as well as Griset and Fulko
Wilhelm conspired in 1167 with Count Aldebert IV of La Marche and Gottfried von Lusignan against Heinrich II. Plantagenet , King of England and husband of Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine . This revolt was put down by this until 1169. In 1173, Wilhelm supported the revolt of the young Duke Richard the Lionheart against his father, which was again unsuccessful.
In 1176 Wilhelm finally joined with other leading nobles of Aquitaine such as Vice Count Adémar V of Limoges against Duke Richard in the uprising. After his son Vulgrin had suffered a crushing defeat against the Duke in a field battle, the rebels had to surrender.
Together with some of the rebels, Wilhelm made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1178, probably as a penance . On the way back home, he died the following year in Messina , Sicily .
