Gottfried (Angoulême)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried (French: Geoffroy ; † December 1048 ) was a Count of Angoulême from the House of Taillefer . He was the second son of Count Wilhelm IV Taillefer and the Gerberga von Anjou.

When his father died in 1028, Gottfried began feuding his older brother, Count Alduin II , from Blaye Castle . After an eight-day siege, however, he had to surrender. His brother forgave him and enfeoffed him with two castles in the Saintonge . Nevertheless, after his brother's death in 1032, Gottfried was able to take control of Angoulême by ignoring the inheritance rights of his nephews.

Gottfried was married to Petronella, a daughter of Mainard "le Riche" and heiress of the castles of Archiac and Bouteville . The couple founded the Saint-Paul priory in Bouteville, where Petronella was buried. They had several children:

  • Fulko († 1087), Count of Angoulême
  • Humberge († 1068/71), with Vice Count Adémar II of Limoges
  • Gottfried Rudel (†?), Mr. von Blaye
  • Arnaud († after 1076), Lord of Montausier
  • Wilhelm († September 20, 1076), from 1040 Bishop of Angoulême
  • Adémar († September 1, 1101), from 1076 Bishop of Angoulême

In his second marriage, Gottfried was married to an unknown Asceline.
