Matfriede

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Matfriede are one of the oldest consistently attested European noble families . Its origins go back to the 8th century , but the names that were added to the dynasty change several times over the years.

The first generations are also referred to as Gerhardiner (after Count Gerhard, the progenitor of the family) or Adalharde (after the Seneschal Adalhard of Emperor Ludwig the Pious ); These are the Counts of Paris and Metz , who are particularly noticeable because of their multiple marital connections with the Carolingians .

In the middle of the 11th century, the Matfriede received the ducal dignity of Lorraine as Counts of Metz , and they have been called the House of Châtenois ever since . Since the marriage of Duke Franz III. Stephan and the Habsburg Maria Theresa are the names of Matfriede and the House of Châtenois Habsburg-Lothringen .
