Konrad I (Swabia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konrad I , who also appeared as Kuno von Öhningen , († August 20, 997 ) from the house of the Konradines was Duke of Swabia from 983 to 997. According to a post-dated document, he founded the Öhningen monastery in 965 . The correctness has not been confirmed so far (1966), but has not been refuted either.

Life

Konrad was probably with Reginlint married to a daughter of the Duke of Swabia after an isolated view Liudolf from the family of Liudolfinger and a granddaughter Emperor I. Otto was.

After the Swabian Duke Otto I died unmarried, childless and unexpectedly on an Italian campaign in 982, Emperor Otto II occupied the Duchy of Swabia with Conrad I, probably his brother-in-law, and thus again with a Franconian and probably a distant relative of the former Duke Hermann I.

The appointment of Konrad, who was loyal to the emperor, was documented in 983 at the court day in Verona ; he and his successors were called "dux Alemannorum et Alsatiorum" (or "Duke of the Swabians and Alsatians" as in a royal charter from 988), Strasbourg was their capital ("caput ducatus"), the focus of the dominion shifted significantly North.

Konrad was the first Duke of Swabia who managed to keep the title in the family: Hermann II was his son, Hermann III. his son, Ernst I, the son-in-law of Hermann II and Ernst II, and Hermann IV's sons of Ernst I, so that something like dynastic continuity arose for the first time for more than fifty years - although not planned by the incumbent.
