geography

Geographical location

Atteln is located on the Sintfeld , the southern partial landscape of the Paderborn plateau in the southwest part of the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge nature park west of the Lichtenau core city. It is located at the mouth of the acid in the Altenau and is the central location in the valley of Altenau that at Blankenrode springing flows through the Paderborn Plateau and Borchen in the Alme opens.

Neighborhoods

Starting in the north, Atteln is bordered clockwise by the Borchen districts Etteln and Dörenhagen , the Lichtenau districts Ebbinghausen , Husen and Dalheim , the Bad Wünnenberg districts Elisenhof and Helmern and the westernmost Lichtenau district Henglarn . These places all belong to the Paderborn district .

climate

Like Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Atteln belongs to the oceanic climatic area of northwest Germany , to which it owes its low temperature contrasts and mild winters. However, continental influences are already at work . The temperature in summer is higher and the nights are cooler than in closer proximity to the coast. The location on the Sintfeld results in a colline climate of the hill country level with cooler temperatures and higher precipitation than in other locations in the district.

history

General

The chronicler Gobelin Person , who lives in the Böddeken monastery , spoke in the 15th century that there was a church in Atteln as early as the 9th century. The construction of a St. Achatius church by the Paderborn Abdinghof monastery is documented for the beginning of the 12th century . For the surrounding villages, Atteln was a main place in the prince-bishopric of Paderborn, both from a religious and an administrative point of view (parish church, free chair / court) . There is evidence of a knight's seat of the Lords of Atteln in the 13th century. Atteln was probably less affected by the regional desertification period in the late Middle Ages. In the course of the Counter Reformation , the parish church of St. Achatius was rebuilt in the baroque style in 1712 .

Witch trials

From 1597 to 1611 witch trials were carried out in Borchen . 13 people from Etteln were charged with alleged sorcery, nine people were burned in Etteln and three people in Atteln, including Elisabeth Schaefer , Margaretha Vogt , "Die Josepsche" von Etteln and Gertraud Kneips .

Modern times

Atteln became Prussian during the occupation of the Principality of Paderborn in 1802 and became part of the German Empire in 1871 .

Before January 1, 1975, the former municipality of Atteln was the seat of the administrative office for the surrounding areas of the Atteln office in the Büren district . With the entry into force of the Sauerland / Paderborn law on this day, most of the municipalities of the Atteln office will be merged with the municipalities of the Lichtenau office to form the new city of Lichtenau (Westphalia) and will become part of the Paderborn district. The legal successor to the office and the municipality of Atteln is the city of Lichtenau.

Flood

After the towns on the Sauer and Altenau rivers, such as Atteln, were often affected by floods - especially in 1965 - the Sudheim flood retention basin was built on the Saueroberlauf near Lichtenau (1978–1980), and the Ebbinghausen flood retention basin (1974–1976 ) on the Sauerunterlauf between Ebbinghausen and Atteln ) and the flood retention basin Husen-Dalheim (1982–1984) was built on the Altenau headwaters .
