Hugh of Montgomery, 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury

Hugh of Montgomery, 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury († 1098 ) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman from the House of Montgommery .

He was the second surviving son of Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury , and the Mabile de Bellême . As was typical of the first generation after the Norman conquest of England , he inherited the property on the island as a younger son in 1094, while his older brother Robert of Bellême got the lands on the continent.

During his four years as an Earl, he spent most of his time in the Welsh Marches battling the Welsh . In 1098 he joined the forces of Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester , to retake Anglesey , which Hugh had lost in the 1094 Welsh uprising. He was killed by an arrow shot when he was a raid by the Norwegian King Magnus III. Faced barefoot at the east end of Menai Strait . According to tradition, the shot was fired by King Magnus himself.

Hugh wasn't married. He was succeeded by his older brother Robert.
