List of the kings of Norway
The list of Norwegian kings traditionally begins with Harald Hårfagre , although he only exercised a certain supremacy over part of western Norway and his kingship differed significantly from the kingship of the Middle Ages.
The dynasties are largely constructed by the saga writers. The secured descent of Harald Hårfagre is shown under his lemma. The term “ Ynglinge ” also comes from constructs of saga literature and cannot be historically proven. Nevertheless, the designations are retained so that the names and assignments commonly used in literature can be followed.
Harald Blauzahn was already the Danish king. In 1389 Norway came under the rule of the Danish kings through the Kalmar Union . They ruled the country in a Danish-Norwegian personal union until 1814 . Since Denmark was on the side of Napoleon Bonaparte , it had to give it over to Sweden after Napoleon's end of Norway . The country was ruled by the Swedish kings in personal union until 1905 before it became independent again through a vote.
The list of kings over the Faroe Islands shows the same kings as this list from 1035 to 1814.
Kingdom of Norway
Ynglinge dynasty
Sources are initially the Ynglingatal from the early and the Háleygjatal from the late 10th century, which found its way into the Latin Nóregs konungatal of the Icelandic chief Jón Loftsson , grandson of Sæmundur inn froði and King Magnus Berføtt , which is also lost. Sæmundur apparently wrote down an older tradition of genealogical skaldic poetry for the first time. The oldest surviving tradition is the anonymous Historia Norwegiæ , which drew from the aforementioned works. There was also the Catalogus regum Norwagensium (lost), from which Theodoricus drew in his Historia de antiquitate regum Norwagiensium .
