Charles VIII ( Karl Knutsson Bonde , * 1408 or 1409; † May 15, 1470 ) was Imperial Administrator of Sweden from 1438 to 1440 and three times King of Sweden and as Charles I King of Norway from 1449 to 1450.

He came from the Bonde family and was the son of Knut Tordsson Bonde and Margareta Karlsdotter (Sparre av Tofta) . After the early death of his father, his mother married Sten Turesson Bielke , on whose farm Karl grew up.

Life

After joining the Swedish Imperial Council in 1434, Karl quickly rose to leading positions. In 1434 he was Reichsmarschall and in 1436 head of the Swedish army (Reichshofsmann). From 1438 to 1440 he held the office of Reich Leader. In 1441 he was knighted and shortly afterwards demoted to Reichsmarschall again.

After the death of King Christopher III. of Sweden, Denmark and Norway Karl was elected on 20 June 1448 by the Swedish nobility to the king while the Danes themselves Christian I chose. A year later he was crowned King of Norway in Trondheim , but he had to cede the country to Christian in 1450. In Sweden there was an uprising in 1457 under the leadership of Jöns Bengtsson Oxenstierna and Erik Axelsson Tott. Karl was deposed and went into exile in Danzig .

His successor in Sweden, Christian I, was overthrown in a renewed uprising in 1464 and Charles was crowned king for the second time, but exiled to Finland after six months in 1465 . In 1467 he was able to return to Sweden and ruled as King of Sweden until his death in 1470. His death led to another Danish-Swedish war .

Karl was married three times and had seven children.

He had a son with his last wife, Kristina Abrahamsdotter , who was not recognized as his successor by the nobility. Instead, his nephew Sten Sture became the new king.
