Olav III. (Norway)
Olav Kyrre (the quiet) (* approx. 1050 ; † 1093 ) was one of Harald Hardråde's two sons . He accompanied his father on his last campaign to England in 1066, but was not involved in the Battle of Stamford . After his father's death and his return home, he and his brother Magnus became the double king in Norway . Nothing is known of any further fighting during his reign. The Danish King Sven Estridsson is said to have planned an attack on Norway. Stein Herdisson wrote about King Olav Kyrre and his adversary Sven Estridsson in 1070:
- Don't want to Sven
- the strong-fighting prince give his hereditary land
- as long as he sits in Kaupang
- where the holy king dwells.
- Olav wants to treat his gender
- the power in all of Norway.
- Ulv's son (= Sven) is not allowed here
- call yourself heir.
In any case, the plan did not materialize. Rather, the agreement between Harald Hardråde and Sven, according to which mutual raids should cease, was renewed in 1068. The administration was reorganized, although the sagas may have ascribed many changes at the beginning of the 12th century to Olav Kyrre. He is wrongly attributed to the founding of the city of Bergen . However, this attribution can be considered archaeologically refuted. The earliest traces date from around 1130.
He could read a report from an English abbot who had been in Norway, and he knew Latin. He was interested in books and had an estate in Båhuslän , where he died of an illness in 1093.
