Bust of Øystein Magnusson

Øystein Magnusson (* around 1088; † August 29, 1123 ) was together with his brothers Olav (who died early) and Sigurd Jorsalfari king in Norway from 1103 to 1123. He was the son of Magnus Barfot and an unknown woman of lower social status. He was married to Ingeborg Guttormsdóttir.

During his reign he took care of the infrastructure, built fishermen's accommodation in Lofoten , expanded mountains and founded the Munkeliv monastery there .

His kingship was still of the classical kind, had to be confirmed by the thing assemblies, and his power was limited by the power of the great Jarle when there were: the mighty Erling Skjalgsson near Stavanger and Einar Tambarskjelve in Trøndelag , each with an equally powerful one Gender in the back. He was also subject to the Thing Court, as evidenced by various right-handers with his brothers.
