Earl of Harcourt

The title Count von Harcourt (Comte d'Harcourt) is a Norman and later French nobility title that has existed since March 1338, when the lordship of Harcourt was merged with the lords of Lillebonne , Troispierres , La Saussaye and Elbeuf and made a county.

When the Viking Rollo was awarded the territories that would later form Normandy by the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911 , he passed part of the acquisition on to the most important men in his area. Harcourt near Brionne and the county of Pont-Audemer came to Bernhard the Dane , one of his relatives and ancestors of the Harcourt family. Bernhard's great-grandson Anquetil is the first to name himself (at the beginning of the 11th century) after the property.

Château d' Harcourt

Anquetil's nephew Robert I. d'Harcourt had the Château d'Harcourt built and made his family one of the first in Normandy. His grandson Robert II. D'Harcourt acquired the Elbeuf rule . After the French conquest of Normandy in 1204 and subsequent expropriations, the Harcourt were usually the leaders of the aristocratic opposition in Normandy. Jean II. D'Harcourt , Marshal of France , better known as Jean Le Preux , acquired through his marriage to Jeanne, heiress of viscounty Châtellerault , the Château of viscounts in Chauvigny that soon after the new owners Château d'Harcourt was called and stayed with the family until 1447.

The Lords and Counts of Harcourt from the Norman house died out in 1452 in the male line with Jean VII. D'Harcourt . The county went to his second daughter, Jeanne d'Harcourt , † 1456, who with Jean III. de Rieux , † 1431, was married, and their descendants from the house of Rieux . The older daughter, Marie, and her husband Antoine de Lorraine , Count of Vaudémont , received the Elbeuf rule, but also claimed Harcourt for themselves, as did their son Jean . A century later, for lack of male descendants in female succession, Harcourt finally went to the Lorraine, now on their branch line, the Guise ; this line died out in 1747.

In addition to the County of Harcourt, there was also a Duchy of Harcourt from 1700 , which had nothing in common with the old county. The duchy was created by merging the Marquisate de La Mothe and the Marquisate Thury (now Thury-Harcourt). The title was supplemented in 1709 by that of a pair of France . The title was held by a younger line of the Harcourt family, descended from Philippe d'Harcourt , † 1403, Seigneur de Bonnétable , a son of Jean V. d'Harcourt . Within this family, the titles of Comte d'Harcourt and Vicomte d'Harcourt were used for the younger sons. The title of Marquis d'Harcourt was awarded separately in 1817 - combined with that of a Pair de France.

Since the son of Jean VII died in 1424, the county of Harcourt went to his second daughter Jeanne d'Harcourt , † 1456, who lived with Jean III. de Rieux , † 1431, was married, and their descendants. The older daughter, Marie, and her husband Antoine de Lorraine , Count of Vaudémont , claimed Harcourt for themselves, as did their son Jean .

Duchy of Harcourt

Harcourt was given in 1700 as the ducal title of a younger line of the House of Harcourt, with no territorial connection to the old County of Harcourt. The duchy was created by amalgamating the Marquisate de La Mothe and the Marquisate Thury . The title was supplemented in 1709 by that of a pair of France .
