François-Henri d'Harcourt

François-Henri d'Harcourt (born January 12, 1726 in Paris , France , † July 22, 1802 in Staines-upon-Thames , England ), also called Count of Lillebonne , was a French duke and peer of France of the Ancien Régime . Since the death of his father in 1783 he had the title of V Duke d'Harcourt.

Life

His parents were Anne Pierre d'Harcourt , IV. Duke d'Harcourt (1701 / 1707–1783), and Thérèse-Eulalie de Beaupoil de Saint-Aulaire (1705–1739). D'Harcourt was Lieutenant-General (1762), Knight of the Ordre du Saint Esprit , Commander ( Grand Bailli ) of Rouen and from 1775 to 1789 Governor of Normandy . In the years from 1786 to 1789 he was by Louis XVI. appointed educator of the Dauphin of France. In 1788 he was elected to the Fauteuil 32 of the Académie française .

In the course of the French Revolution he fought in the army of the emigrants , where he temporarily commanded the cavalry unit of the Chevaliers-dragons de la couronne as the successor to Armand Emmanuel du Plessis, duc de Richelieu . He then emigrated to Great Britain, where he represented the French king de jure from 1792 to 1802.

The Duke d'Harcourt married Françoise Catherine Scholastique d'Aubusson (1733–1815) on June 13, 1752, their daughter Anne (1753–1778) was married to Victurnien-Jean-Baptiste de Rochechouart , Duc de Mortemart.

Trivia

The portrait of Jean-Honoré Fragonard from before 1759 (see next door) was sold at the London auction house Bonhams in 2013 for the price of 15 million pounds.
