Life

Arenberg's family supported the Habsburgs in the Netherlands. His godfather was Charles V. After his upbringing, he also supported the Spanish claim to rule in the Netherlands. He served as a troop commander under Alexander Farnese . Among other things, he took part in the fight against the Archbishop of Cologne, Gebhard I von Waldburg, who had converted to Protestantism in the Truchsessian War . He was also involved in the siege of Antwerp in 1585. Arenberg was appointed treasurer by the governor Archduke Albert and in 1599 was appointed councilor, admiral and lieutenant general of the seas.

He was sent to England as a member of a delegation and negotiated a peace in the Anglo-Spanish War, which had been going on since 1585, as part of the later so-called Eighty Years War for the independence of the Netherlands. This led to the Peace of London, which was concluded in 1604. Among his personal companions on this mission was the lawyer Jacobus Boonen .

On his return he was made Knight of the Golden Fleece and Grand First Class of the Kingdom of Spain.

Arenberg acquired the lordship and castle Enghien in what is now Belgium. There he had a garden laid out in the Renaissance style .
