Margaretha von der Marck-Arenberg (* 1527 at Reckheim Castle , † 1599 at Zevenberghen Castle ) was the ruling countess from 1541 to 1547 and since 1576 she was the countess of Arenberg .

Life

After the death of Robert III. von der Marck-Arenberg, who had died without descendants, became his sister Margaretha heiress of the property. In 1547 she married Johann von Ligne , Baron von Barbençon . He fought as a commander in Spanish service. Charles V confirmed the provision in the couple's marriage contract that Johann von Ligne was allowed to use the name Arenberg and his coat of arms. From the marriage, the third line of the Arenberg family emerged from the Ligne family . Johann von Ligne was made an imperial count in 1549 . He fell in 1568 at the Battle of Heiligerlee .

Then Margarethe took over the rule for her son. In 1568 she was able to avert a siege from Aremberg Castle . In 1571 her Emperor Maximilian II confirmed the imperial immediacy , the Bergregal and the right to mint . Their subjects were forbidden to appeal to courts outside of the rule.

During her reign she had Arenberg Castle expanded. In 1576 she had a new chapel built. Margarethe von Arenberg issued state regulations for her rule . It promoted mining and metallurgy. Not least with regard to the need for charcoal for smelting, the countess issued forest regulations.

The Catholic Margarethe took part in the witch hunt . In 1593 she issued an ordinance against witchcraft for her area and also tried to combat it by increasing religious education.

Beyond the rule of Arenberg, Margaretha also played a role in the Netherlands and at the imperial court. In 1572 she was the chief stewardess of Archduchess Elisabeth and accompanied her to her wedding with Charles IX. to France. In 1576 Margaret and her son were Karl in the Imperial Prince collected.
