Beaumont (French, Wall. Biômont ) is a municipality in the Belgian province of Hainaut . It lies on the French border and is crossed by the Hante River.

The municipality includes the places Barbençon, Beaumont, Leugnies, Leval-Chaudeville, Renlies, Solre-Saint-Gery, Strée and Thirimont.

history

Beaumont is known for the salamander tower, which was burned down by the French in 1655 and the English in 1691, its buttons and also for its legend of the three Auvergners. These three, accused of theft, had allegedly shown themselves to be disrespectful to Charles V. They should be hanged an hour after arriving in town. Hence the maxim, “Beaumont, a city of woe. Arrival at noon, hanged after an hour ”. This legend is the subject of a parade every five years, the last one being held in October 2015.
