Quiévrain is a municipality in the Belgian province of Hainaut . It is right on the French border. The municipality is crossed by the Hogneau river, which is called Grande Honnelle here .
traffic
For a long time Quiévrain was the most important border station between Belgium and France. Most trains from Brussels to Paris used the connection between Mons and Valenciennes , which reached the border at Quiévrain. Today the connection ends on both sides of the border. Cross-border rail traffic no longer takes place here. Long-distance trains such as the Étoile du Nord used the connection from Mons via Quévy and Saint-Quentin to Paris. Today, Thalys uses a high-speed connection.
Outre-Quiévrain
The French author Frédéric Dard likes to use the term outre-Quiévrain for Belgium in his crime novels written in the San Antonio series (e.g. in Bas les pattes, Fleuve noir No. 59), derived from the border station. In Belgium you were in a sense “beyond Quiévrain”. From a Belgian point of view, this designation can apply the other way round to France.
Origin of name
The place name is derived from the Latin "Caprinium" ( goat forest ).
