Philipp-Karl von Arenberg (French: Philippe-Charles d'Arenberg ) (born October 18, 1587 in Barbençon , † September 25, 1640 in Madrid ), from the House of Ligne , was the second prince of Arenberg and the sixth duke of Aarschot .

family

He was the son of Prince Karl and the mother Anna von Croÿ. Philipp-Karl was married three times. His first marriage was from 1610 to Pierre Hippolyte Anne de Melun, Baronesse de Caumont, the second time from 1620 to Isabelle Claire de Berlaymont, Comtesse de Lalaing and the third time from 1632 to Maria Cleopha von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen. The marriages resulted in a total of nine children. Among them were the later dukes Philipp Franz and Karl Eugen .

Life

He succeeded his father in 1616 as Prince of Arenberg and Duke of Aarschot and inherited a large part of his possessions. During his time there were various cases of witch hunts in the Arenberg area.

He fought in the service of the Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs . He was a colonel in a Walloon regiment. Among other things, he was governor of the city and county of Namur . He was a knight of the Golden Fleece and a Spanish grandee . In 1634, he was falsely accused of being part of a conspiracy against the Spanish crown. He was imprisoned in Madrid. He spent the last six years of his life under house arrest at his home in Madrid.

Arenberg was a major art collector. Even during his imprisonment, he acquired numerous pictures through agents. These included works by Paul de Vos , Frans Snyders , Gaspar de Crayer , Salomon Noveliers and Peter Paul Rubens .
