Frans Snyders (baptized November 11, 1579 in Antwerp , † August 19, 1657 in Antwerp) was a Flemish painter.
Life
Frans Snyders was a pupil of Pieter Bruegel the Younger . Also Hendrick van Balen is one of their teachers. He stayed mainly in his hometown Antwerp. There he ran a large studio and did commissioned work with numerous students, including Jan Fyt .

He created great still lifes and also made a name for himself in animal painting . His favorite depictions also include hunting, game and poultry. He often worked with Rubens on this. The correct assignment of the countless works by Frans Snyders is difficult to this day. Snyders and Rubens believed that their works could be recognized by their unmistakable style, and therefore rarely signed. Wrong attributions occurred because successors (e.g. Jan Fyt) copied motifs from their teachers and included them in their catalogs of preliminary drawings. The authorship of her works, which is still controversial to this day, ranges between the irrefutable statements by Bordley and the monograph by Hella Robels, which only makes purely stylistic assignments. Robels thinks something like “F. Snyders ”signed picture Dead fish guarded by a dog for the work of another painter.
Typical of Frans Snyder's large-format early creative phase are his works “Dog Hunt for a Bear” and “Dog Hunt for a Bear”. (formerly the Jacob Christian Jacobsen collection )
A bust of him made by Rauch is in the Walhalla in Donaustauf .
