Life

Van Balen was a student of Adam van Noort , and Marten de Vos may also have been his teacher. At the age of seventeen he was accepted as a master in the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp . He served as the second dean of that guild in 1608 and 1609 and as first dean in 1609 and 1610.

Between 1595 and 1602 van Balen traveled to Italy, presumably visiting Rome, Venice and other cities. Although there are no records of his trip, on his return to Antwerp he became a member of the Brotherhood of Romanists . In 1613 the brotherhood also elected him dean. His contemporary Sebastian Vrancx was a member of the same brotherhood, and the two painters were friends.

Three of his sons became painters: Jan van Balen , Gaspard van Balen and Hendrik van Balen the Younger. His daughter Maria married the painter Theodoor van Thulden . Van Balen ran a successful studio for over 30 years and had many students. The guild registers show a total of 26 students from Balen, including Anthonis van Dyck and Frans Snyders .

In 1613 he traveled to the northern Netherlands with Jan Brueghel and Peter Paul Rubens . Otherwise he stayed in Antwerp.

At the beginning of his career, van Balen executed a series of large altarpieces showing the influence of Adam van Noort. His later altarpieces, with rich and subtle colors, were apparently painted in his studio after Van Dyck's arrival. Hendrik van Balen also painted mythological or biblical scenes on small plates or copper plates. His works often include nude figures in a mythological or religious scene, set in an idyllic setting. Hendrik van Balen also painted landscapes .

Balen had also painted together with other artists, e. B. with Joos de Momper , Jan Brueghel or Peter Paul Rubens . Anthonis van Dyck portrayed his teacher Balen in 1627/1630. The picture can be seen at the J. Paul Getty Museum today.
