Lezay is a French commune in the department of Deux-Sèvres in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine with an area of 4,563 hectares and 1,999 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017). Lezay belongs to the canton of Celles-sur-Belle .

Lezay is located about 380 km south of Paris and 120 km east of ( La Rochelle ) near the prime meridian . The altitude is 124  m .

history

The place was first mentioned in the 11th century and was originally a fiefdom of the Lusignans .

politics

Town twinning

There has been an official partnership between Lezay and the German municipality of Barver since August 26, 1973. This is intensively maintained on an annual basis in the form of mutual visits.

Attractions

The castle ruins (12th century), which served as a quarry in the 18th century to procure the material for the construction of the Château du Marais (18th century), and the Château de Grandehamp (17th century) are worth seeing.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main sources of income are agriculture and animal husbandry, the production of sheep's cheese and, to a lesser extent, tourism. Campsites as well as holidays and camping on the farm are offered. The center of attraction for holiday guests is the Haras de la Dive horse stud.
