history

The map of the Abbey of Saint-Cyprien in Poitiers from 936 shows a place of Frontaniacus , to which the place name goes back. The addition goes back to the French Marshal Pierre I. de Rohan , who married his cousin Anne de Rohan in 1517 and founded the Rohan-Rohan line. The coat of arms of the municipality corresponds almost completely to the family coat of arms of Pierre de Rohan. The rulership of the Rohan family also included the Barony of Frontenay, which was elevated to a duchy in 1626 (although initially without a nobility letter). Until 1626 the barony was called Frontenay-l'Abattu , then from 1714 with the name Duchy of Rohan-Rohan (to distinguish it from the Duchy of Rohan-Chabot ). The current name of the community with the addition of the family line was formed in 1897. Previously the place name was Frontenay.

In 1242 the English tried without success with King Louis IX. negotiate an armistice from France.
