It belongs to the Arrondissement of Niort and the Canton of Saint-Maixent-l'École (until 2015: Canton of Saint-Maixent-l'École-2 ). The inhabitants are called Saint-Martinomaixentais .

Saint-Martin-de-Saint-Maixent is located about 20 kilometers east-northeast of Niort on the Sèvre Niortaise . Saint-Martin-de-Saint-Maixent is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Maixent-l'École in the north, Nateuil in the northeast, Sainte-Eanne in the east, Souvigné in the south and southeast, Romans in the south and southwest, and Sainte-Neomayé in the Southwest and Azay-le-Brûlé in the west.
