Saint-Pierre church

Chauray is a French commune in the department of Deux-Sèvres in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It is located in the Arrondissements of Niort and in the canton of La Plaine Niortaise .

geography

The western French town with 7006 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located a few kilometers northeast of Niort on the Sèvre Niortaise river .

The A83 ( E 3 ) and the D 611 ( E 601 ) intersect to the east of Chauray .

history

Traces of prehistoric settlement have been found near Chauray. The place is also passed down as Vicaria Calriacinse .

German emigrants came here as Protestants because of religious persecution. In the 19th century, two thirds of the population were Protestants. Their church, the so-called Temple , was built in 1854. The Catholic Church of St. Pierre was built in the 12th century.
