Saint-Gelais is located about eight kilometers northeast of Niort city center . Saint-Gelais is surrounded by the neighboring communities Cherveux in the north and northeast, François in the east, Chauray in the south, Niort in the southwest and Échiré in the west. The A83 autoroute runs through the municipality .
