Saint-Symphorien is in the Saintonge countryside . In the north of the municipality runs the Guirande river , into which the Bief flows. Saint-Symphorien is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bessines in the north and north-west, Niort in the north, Aiffres in the east, Fors in the south-east, Granzay-Gript in the south and Frontenay-Rohan-Rohan in the west.
Route nationale 248 runs along the southern edge of the municipality .
