Saint-Maixent-l'Ecole is a French municipality with 6982 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Deux-Sèvres in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Niort and is the capital of the canton of Saint-Maixent-l'École .
history
Saint-Maixent was founded by the monk Agapit around 459 and was initially called Saint Saturnin. In 480 the monk adjutor settled as a disciple of Agapit. Adjutor later took the name Maixent and gave the city its name.

- Saint-Maixent has been the seat of the École nationale des sous-officiers d'active (hence the name extension) since 1963 , where all non-commissioned officers of the French ground forces are trained.
- The abbey church, built in 940, houses the relic of Saints Maixent and Leodegar of Autun ; it was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt in the 11th and 13th centuries in Romanesque style ; Destroyed again by Calvinists in 1668 , it was rebuilt on the Romanesque foundations in the Gothic style .
