Johann von Bruges or Jean V. de Gruuthuse (* around 1458 in Bruges , † 1512 before September 6 in Abbeville ) was a Flemish nobleman.

He was the son of Ludwig von Bruges and Margareta von Borsselen. John of Bruges was knighted in 1479 . He was councilor and treasurer of the future Emperor Maximilian, Duke of Burgundy , Grand Hunter of the County of Flanders and Burgrave of Lille . When he came into opposition to Maximilian (his father was imprisoned for Felonie from 1485 to 1488 ), he went to France, where he was appointed Seneschal of Anjou in 1489 . When his father died in 1492, he inherited his Burgundian title as Lord of Gruuthuse (in Bruges ) and Prince of Steenhuise and the English title of 2nd Earl of Winchester .

In 1498 Johann was appointed Grand Master of the Crossbowmen of France (Grand maître des arbalétriers de France) and included in the Ordre de Saint-Michel , and the following year he was made captain of the Louvre . Another year later he returned the title of Earl of Winchester to the English crown. In 1504 he was appointed lieutenant general and governor of Picardy . He died in Abbeville in 1512 and was buried in Saint-Riquier Abbey .

Johann von Bruges married three times. His first marriage was around 1478 with Marie d'Auxy, daughter of Jean IV d'Auxy and Jeanne de Flavy; From this marriage comes a daughter, Marguerite, who married Jacques II. de Luxembourg, Herr von Fiennes , Gavre etc. († 1519, House Luxemburg-Ligny ). His second marriage (the marriage contract dates from March 18, 1480) he concluded with Renée de Bueil, daughter of Antoine de Bueil, Count of Sancerre ( Bueil house ); this marriage remained childless.

At the age of almost 50, he married Marie de Melun , Dame de Montmirail († after September 1536), daughter of Jean de Melun and Isabelle de Luxembourg , on November 30, 1505 . There are three children from this marriage, including two sons:

  2. René († 1572), Lord of Gruuthuse, Prince of Steenhuise
  3. Anne († 1534), nun

Marie de Melun married Jacques II. De Chabannes , lord of La Palice (⚔ 1525 at the Battle of Pavia ), in 1515 Marshal of France, on February 20, 1513 .
