Edward Maurice Fitzgerald Denny (born October 3, 1930 in Abinger , Surrey , England ; † May 20, 2014 ) better known under his pseudonym Robyn Denny , was a British painter and printmaker . He was one of the legendary group of British artists who made British art international in the late 1950s. He studied at the Royal College of Art in the mid-1950s, in a generation that, inspired by Abstract Expressionism , American films, popular culture, and urban modernism, only recognized abstract painting as the only conceivable artistic path. He was one of the representatives of hard-edge painting.

life and work

From 1950 to 1954 he studied in Paris and at St. Martin's School of Art in London, followed by two years service in the Royal Navy . After graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1957, he received a scholarship to study in Italy and was visiting professor at the Hammersmith School of Art , the Slade School of Art and the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham .

His artistic career has included participation in landmark exhibitions across Europe and the United States. These included a retrospective at the Tate Gallery (1973); ' Place ' (Institute of Contemporary Arts, London, 1959); ' Situation ' (RBA Galleries, London, 1960); participation in documenta III 1964 in Kassel in the department "Aspects 1964" ; ' London: the New Scene ' ( Walker Art Gallery , Liverpool, Minneapolis and the North American Tour, 1965); Venice Biennale , 1966 and ' The Sixties Art Scene in London ' (Barbican Art Gallery, London, 1993).

Denny moved to Los Angeles in 1981 and did not return to London until the 1990s. In California he found a congenial urban setting and natural light for his art, including the infamous smog, which enabled him to develop a new artistic aesthetic.

His works are part of many public and private collections, including the Daimler Chrysler Collection, Berlin ; the Tate Gallery , London; the Victoria and Albert Museum , London; the Museum of Modern Art , New York City ; the Chase Manhattan Bank , New York; the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC ; the Walker Art Center , Minneapolis or the National Gallery of Australia , Sydney . Graphics are also located at Embankment Underground Station in London.
