Antoine de Croy

Antoine de Croÿ (* 1465/70; † September 21, 1495 off the coast of Cyprus ) was Bishop of Thérouanne in Picardy .

biography

Antoine de Croÿ belonged to the noble family Croÿ . His parents were Philippe I. de Croÿ , Count of Porcéan , and Jacqueline of Luxembourg. From 1485 he was Bishop of Thérouanne . In 1495 he accompanied his cousin Count Palatine Alexander von Pfalz-Zweibrücken and his brother-in-law, Count Johann Ludwig von Nassau-Saarbrücken, on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The bishop accompanied the tour group from Padua from Venice to Jerusalem . With him came his secretary Philipp von Lobel, Canon of Thérouanne, and other servants. On the way back from Jerusalem he fell ill on September 10, 1495 and died on September 21, 1495 "not yet 30 years old" off the coast of Cyprus. That same night he was buried in front of the high altar in the church of St. Lazarus in Salamis .
