Sigmund Feyerabend (* 1528 in Heidelberg ; † April 24, 1590 in Frankfurt am Main ) was one of the most important printers and publishers in the 16th century.

Life

Feyerabend completed an apprenticeship as a shape cutter . After years of apprenticeship and traveling in Italy, he came to Frankfurt, where he married Magdalena Borckhauer's daughter, Magdalena Borckhauer , on August 14, 1559 and acquired citizenship on May 25, 1560. In 1562 he founded the Companei, a publishing association with Georg Rab and the heirs Weigand Hans . The Companei quickly became one of the most important publishers of the 16th century. The rise was based on a feeling for the market, as well as on the cooperation with outstanding illustrators such as Jost Amman and Virgilius Solis . By 1570 an assortment of over 60 productions had come onto the market, including popular, historical, theological and legal works.

Little by little, Feyerabend made most of Frankfurt's printers dependent on him. At the same time he was an unscrupulous businessman who was involved in several lawsuits, partly because of unauthorized reprints, partly because he ignored imperial or municipal privileges. On November 23, 1564 he was imprisoned for five days in a tower of the Frankfurt city fortifications because he had circulated the Turkish rejection letter to the Roman royal majesty without a concession from the council in the Newen newspapers .

In the 1570s Feyerabend achieved considerable prosperity. In 1567 he taxed a fortune of 6,000 guilders , while in 1577 he fell into the highest tax bracket with more than 16,000 guilders. In 1579 he bought the houses at Zum Rendel on Töngesgasse and Zum Kleiner Stalburg on Liebfrauenberg . Feyerabend had a new building erected on the site right next to the Liebfrauenkirche . After that, his company ran into financial difficulties. As early as 1583 he had to pledge the house at Kleiner Stalburg and in 1585 take out a loan from the council.

On April 22, 1590, Feyerabend died of a stroke . On April 24th, he was buried in the Dominican Church. The Gutenberg monument on the Roßmarkt , created in 1840, shows a portrait of Feyerabend in one of the medallions under the cornice.
