Écoliers you Christ
The canons of the Ecoliers du Christ , also known as Val des Écoliers or simply Écoliers , are, according to tradition, founded in 1201 by four theologians from the University of Paris based on a vision: Guillaume Langlois († 1215/23), Richard, Evrard and Manassès, who were between 20 and 30 years old at the time, gave up their chairs and retired to an isolated valley near Chaumont-en-Bassigny on the border between Champagne and Burgundy.
The group became a religious community when they were joined by the resigned Bishop of Châlons , Frédéric (a person not proven in this office) and 37 Parisian students, the Écoliers . A monastery was founded in 1212 in the valley of Verbriesles ( Diocese of Langres ) according to the Augustinian rule , in 1215 the order was recognized by the Bishop of Langres, and in 1219 by Pope Honorius III. the rule of the order. In 1234 the community moved to the Marne .
The order spread in France, but also in Belgium, where it maintained priories in Géronsart (today Couvin ), Mons , Mechelen , Houffalize and Liège . The main branches were those in Paris, Reims and Liege. The construction of a priory in Paris began in 1229, where the order later had a college and a chair at the university. In its heyday, the Écoliers included 28 priories in 16 dioceses. He managed to maintain his independence for over three centuries until the daughters in 1629 and the motherhouse in 1636 were forced to join the Congrégation de France .
