Parammobatodes is a genus from the Apidae family within the bees . They are cuckoo bees , i.e. breeding parasites.

Eight species of the genus are described worldwide, seven are common in the Palearctic , and one species ( P. indicus ) occurs in India. One or two species occur in German-speaking countries, only in Austria.

Parammobatodes bees are called short- horn bees in German . This name also applies to the bees of the genus Pasites , which is closely related to Parammobatodes .

features

The body is 2.5 to 8 mm long, with the native species 4.5 to 6 mm. The abdomen is mostly red in color. Two particularly small species of the genus are entirely red-brown. There are two cubital cells in the fore wing . The females do not have a collecting apparatus, the bees are generally very sparsely hairy. They can be distinguished from the closely related genera Pasites and Ammobates by their wing veins.

Way of life

Since the bees of the genus Parammobatodes are breeding parasites (cuckoo bees), they lay their eggs in the nests of other bees. The females only visit flowers to supply themselves with nectar. The species of Parammobatodes that occur in Central Europe parasitize on bees of the Camptopoeum genus .

Systematics

Parammobatodes belongs in the family of Apidae to the subfamily Nomadinae , tribe Ammobatini. Further genera of the tribe are Ammobates (40 species), Melanempis (5 species), Oreopasites (11 species), Pasites (21 species), Sphecodopsis (10) and Spinopasites (1 species).

Parammobatodes was partially united with Pasites , or was understood as a subgenus of Pasites . However, Parammobatodes is most closely related to Ammobates .
