The conclave of May 1555 was the electoral assembly of the cardinals after the death of Pope Marcellus II and lasted from May 15, 1555 to May 23, 1555, i.e. nine days. His choice fell on the cardinal dean Gian Pietro Carafa, who called himself Pope Paul IV .

College of Cardinals

At the time of the electoral conclave, the College of Cardinals consisted of 56 cardinals, 37 of whom attended the opening of the conclave. Another 3 cardinals arrived late and 10 stayed away. Due to the brevity of the past pontificate , there have been no changes since the last conclave.
