Francesco Pisani (* 1494 in Venice , † June 28, 1570 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Career

Don Francesco from the noble family of the Pisani was created cardinal on July 1, 1517 by Pope Leo X in his fifth consistory . He was initially assigned the title diaconia of San Teodoro in 1518 , later as a cardinal priest the title church of San Marco (1527–1555; in commendam 1555–1564). On August 8, 1524 he was appointed Bishop of Padua . He was ordained bishop on May 5, 1527 by the Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri , Cardinal Dean Alessandro Farnese, who later became Pope Paul III. He held this office until 1567. From 1529 to 1545 he was cardinal deacon of Sant'Agata dei Goti . In 1555 and 1557 he was appointed Cardinal Bishop of Albano (1555–1557) and Frascati (1557–1562). From 1562 to 1564 Pisani was Cardinal Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina , and finally Cardinal Bishop of Ostia e Velletri from 1564. As such, he was dean of the College of Cardinals from 1564 until his death.

Patronage

In 1535–1543 he had the Villa dei Vescovi in Torreglia expanded based on a design by Giovanni Maria Falconetto (1468–1532). He commissioned Andrea Palladio to build the Villa Pisani in Montagnana . He was a patron of the arts and particularly encouraged the painters Paolo Veronese and Giambattista Maganza and the sculptor Alessandro Vittoria . He commissioned Veronese to make the altarpiece of the Transfiguration of Christ for the high altar of the cathedral of Montagnana (1555/6). His statue (No. 70) stands near the Basilica of Santa Giustina in the inner ring on the Prato della Valle in Padua, according to the will of Alvise and Francesco Pisani.
