master | FK Austria Vienna (14) |

The Austrian Football Championship 1979/80 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The single-track 2nd division served as a substructure for the 1st division . The third level was the Regionalliga Ost (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland), the Alpine League ( Salzburg , Tyrol ) and the regional leagues of Vorarlberg , Carinthia , Upper Austria and Styria .
First performance level - 1st division
General
Regarding the summer transfers, there was a statement that "many transfers were made, but there were no sensations; VÖEST Linz had the most expensive players, Rapid Vienna the youngest". The championship started on August 17th in the 1st division, August 25th in the 2nd division and ended on June 7th. There was a revised schedule for the third and fourth quarters of the championship, which began in spring 1980 (with rounds of the weekdays), which was also based on whether the national team would qualify for the 1980 European championship. March 26th, April 22nd and May 6th were planned, with the latter two in any case being wanted to be finished on June 7th. The qualification was missed, but the dates of the 28th and 31st rounds remained.
As in the previous two years, Wiener Austria was able to prevail in the championship in the 1st Division 1979/80 by a large margin and thus become Austrian champions for the 14th time. Walter Schachner took the top scorer from the violets again, with 34 goals. As Austrian champions, Austria was able to qualify for the 1981 European Cup , Cup finalist Austria Salzburg was allowed to take part in the 1981 European Cup , and the two defeated Linz pursuers VOEST and LASK represented Austrian football in the 1981 UEFA Cup . All four clubs failed in the first round, whereby the departure of Herbert Prohaska to Inter Milan should also be noted at Meister Austria Wien . Austria failed against the Scottish club Aberdeen (A 0: 1, H 0: 0), Salzburg were completely without a chance against Fortuna Düsseldorf (A 0: 5, H 0: 3). But the two representatives from Linz also suffered two defeats: VÖEST against Zbrojovka Brno (A 1: 3, H 0: 2), LASK against Radnicki Nis (H 1: 2, A 1: 4).
The signing of Hans Krankl at First Vienna FC 1894 in January , which however, could not prevent the relegation of the traditional club, was considered a special feature . Already after the penultimate round, the home 1: 3 against runner-up VÖEST Linz on May 31, relegation was certain - the 4: 3 over the Grazer AK in the last round on June 7 was irrelevant. As champions of the 2nd division in 1975/76, the Vienna had again been "first class" for four years.
There had been a three-way battle against relegation for a long time, because after the 31st round on May 6th, Vienna was still in 8th place, with 23 points only one point ahead of their fellow competitors Wiener Sport-Club (which the Vienna had defeated 1-0 in this 31st round) and SK Sturm Graz , but afterwards there was a 0-3 in the direct duel against Sturm in Graz - and the Graz team, including this match, scored seven points in four games in a row, the Sport-Club also five, while Vienna only managed one.
Award table
In addition to the "correct" table, there was also a bonus table, because every match that ended in a draw was followed by a penalty shoot-out. The highest score of such a penalty shoot-out was in the 25th round on April 5, when Sturm Graz beat Linz ASK 1: 1 and it ended at 12:13. In the "correct" table - as always (and as it was and is usual in all championships) for each team the (possibly) scored goals and one point each were taken over. The result of the penalty shoot-out was included in the bonus table in terms of both goals and points; Such a premium table, which thus did not contain any ties, was published every quarter. The first quarter (up to and including the 9th round) was won by the Grazer AK before Austria Wien, the second (up to and including the 18th round) by the Linz ASK before Austrias Wien - and Austria Wien then won the last two quarters, each in front of the LASK.
Yellow cards were not counted
In a match itself there was the possibility that a player who had already been cautioned with a yellow card would receive the red card for another offense ( yellow-red was not yet available at this point in time), but there was no suspension after a certain number of yellow cards - the league commission had repealed this measure at the request of Admira / Wacker - and it was precisely this club that attracted the most yellow (38) and red (4) cards in the autumn season. The increasing bad habits (fouls and other rule violations) at the matches, however, led the ÖFB federal executive board to re-introduce the bans (after four yellow cards) from next season at the presidential conference.
Others
At the stadium opening on May 24th in Schwechat-Rannersdorf, Austria Wien played the home game against Vienna in the 34th round, won 3-0 and therefore did not provide any support for the relegation-threatened Döblinger team.

Second performance level - 2nd division
The Favoritner AC had to wait until the opening of the sports field on September 8th to be able to play home games, which is why the planned matches (including a cup game and 2 championship matches) were played away.
In the 2nd division, SC Eisenstadt fixed the championship title.
