FC Union Wels

The FC Union Wels was an Austrian football club from the Upper Austrian regional capital Wels and played a total of two seasons in the Austrian Bundesliga .

The club was founded in 1946 and played its way up to the 2nd division of the Bundesliga in the 1980s. After an increase in the top division, FC Union reached sixth place in the 2nd division in the 1981/82 season for the first and only promotion to the first Bundesliga.

The first game year 1982/83 the Welser finished in 14th place and surprisingly managed to stay one point ahead of Vienna . In the 1983/84 season , the club ran into financial difficulties and had to file for bankruptcy after the first spring round, which was played in the fall . After the last game, a 2-1 win against FavAC in Vienna , Raika Wels , as the club was sponsored by the Raiffeisenkasse , gave all players free approval and withdrew from the current competition.

After the dissolution of the club could be prevented, the former first division player only played in the Upper Austrian lower house for the next few decades. In 2003, FC Union Wels merged with city rivals Eintracht to form the new Wels football club .
