Juan Álvarez y Alva de Toledo OP (born July 15, 1488 in Toledo , † September 15, 1557 in Rome ) was a Spanish Dominican , bishop and cardinal .

Life

Álvarez was the son of the second Duke of Alba, Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo , and his wife Isabel de Zúñiga. His brothers were the Spanish admiral García Álvarez de Toledo and the Viceroy of Naples, Pedro Álvarez de Toledo , his nephew was Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba , who was governor of the Netherlands.

In 1507 Juan Álvarez y Alva de Toledo entered the Dominican monastery of San Esteban in Salamanca . His studies took him to the Colegio de San Gregorio in Valladolid and to the University of Paris . In 1513 he was called by the general chapter of his order in Genoa as a teacher of theology in Salamanca. In 1523 Álvarez y Alva de Toledo was appointed Bishop of Córdoba , in 1537 Bishop of Burgos , and in 1538 Pope Paul III raised him . the Cardinal and he was awarded in 1541 as a cardinal priest , the titular church of Santa Maria in Portico Octaviae . His title church changed frequently until he was accepted into the class of cardinal bishops in 1553.

From 1540 Álvarez y Alva de Toledo went to the Curia in Rome. There he worked with Cardinal Carafa, who later became Pope Paul IV , for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith . He was considered restrictive on questions of faith, but was one of the few reformers in the curia. After the death of Pope Paul III. in 1549 he was traded as his possible successor, but his election was prevented by the Italian cardinals and Julius III. , an Italian, was chosen as a compromise candidate. In 1550 Cardinal Álvarez was appointed Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela in Rome . Also in that year he became cardinal protector of the German nation. In 1553 he became Cardinal Bishop of Albano and in 1555 moved to the suburbicarian bishopric of Frascati .

Shortly before his death in Rome, he witnessed how his nephew's soldiers occupied the Papal States in 1557 as a reaction to the anti-Habsburg and France-friendly policies of Pope Paul IV.
