Colegio de San Gregorio
The Colegio de San Gregorio is a historic building in Valladolid . Today it houses the Museo Nacional de Escultura . It was founded at the end of the 15th century as the theological college of the Dominican Order .
The University of Valladolid was founded in the 13th century by Alfonso X the Wise. This also meant that in the course of time so-called colegios (comparable to the British colleges ) emerged next to or in connection with the university .
The creation of the Colegio de San Gregorio went back to Alonso de Burgos , the bishop of Palencia, a Dominican who was the confessor of the Catholic kings . With papal approval, work began in 1488 on the bishop's grave chapel. The building of the college was probably completed in 1496. The college accommodated around 20 students each. The graduates include well-known theologians and artists such as Bartolomé de las Casas , Melchor Cano , Luis de Granada and Francisco de Vitoria . The site was the venue for the Valladolid dispute . The function of the building complex as a theological college ended in the 19th century, and since April 29, 1933 it has been the seat of the national sculpture museum.
