Louis I. de Lorraine-Guise (born October 21, 1527 in Joinville , † March 29, 1578 in Paris ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Louis was the fourth son of Claude de Lorraine, duc de Guise and Antoinette de Bourbon , and thus the younger brother of Cardinal Charles de Lorraine-Guise and Duke François de Lorraine, duc de Guise .

Ludwig became Bishop of Troyes on May 11, 1545 , Bishop of Albi on June 27, 1550 , Archbishop of Sens on May 9, 1561 (but resigned for Cardinal Nicolas de Pellevé a year later ) and Archbishop on October 5, 1568 pro hac vice from Metz . He was consecrated on April 1, 1571 by his brother Charles.

Already in the consistory of December 22, 1553 he was by Pope Julius III. created a cardinal. As a cardinal deacon he received the titular church of San Tommaso in Parione on July 17, 1555 . On March 24, 1568 he was made cardinal priest of the same church.

He was a participant in two papal elections : at the conclave of May 1555 , which elected Cardinal Gian Pietro Carafa as Pope Paul IV on May 23, 1555 , and at the 1559 conclave , in which Cardinal Giovanni Angelo de 'Medici as Pope Pius IV on December 25, 1559 . was chosen. He did not take part in the conclaves of 1553, 1565/66 and 1572.

On February 13, 1575, Louis de Lorraine crowned Henry III. in Reims as King of France .
