Joinville is a French commune with 3,069 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haute-Marne department in the Grand Est region .
geography
Joinville is the fourth largest city in the Haute-Marne department. It is located on the Marne River , which crosses the city. Downstream of the city, the Marne is regulated by the largest reservoir in France, Lake Der-Chantecoq . The river also feeds the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne ( dt: Canal between Champagne and Burgundy ), through which - via other rivers and canals - a navigable connection from the Paris area to the Mediterranean is made possible.
history
- The founding of Joinville is said to go back to Jovinus , who built a fortress here in 354 to keep the Alemanni defeated by the later Emperor Julian in place.
- Stephan von Joinville ( fr: Étienne de Vaux ) had the castle built in 1027.
- Gottfried III. , one of his direct descendants, donated the Collegiate Church of St. Laurent in 1163 , the burial place of the later lords of Joinville, for which the sculptor Jacques Bachot created two late Gothic tombs around 1495/1504, which are now lost.
- Two bishops came from the Vaux-Joinville family:
- Guido III. of the Diocese of Châlons died in 1190 during the Third Crusade in Palestine and
- Guillaume de Joinville from the diocese of Langres became archbishop of Reims and crowned Louis VIII King of France.
- Gottfried IV died in the Holy Land.
- Gottfried V fought in Palestine alongside Richard the Lionheart , King of England.
- The Joinville fief was subsequently administered by three houses:
- Joinville came to the House of Lorraine in the 14th century . Margarete , the last descendant of the Vaux-Joinville family and heiress of the County of Vaudémont , married Friedrich , the second son of Johann I , Duke of Lorraine.
- In 1544, the Habsburg king Charles V besieged Joinville and burned the city down, as did many villages in its vicinity. It was rebuilt soon after under the rule of Claude de Lorraine and in 1552 made a principality for the dukes of Guise by King Henry II .
- In 1693 Philippe I, Duke of Orléans , brother of Louis XIV , became Prince of Joinville by inheritance.
- At the time of the French Revolution , the feudal lordship belonged to Louis-Philippe II , Duke of Orléans and Prince of Joinville. He was guillotined on November 6, 1793 after being wrongly charged with treason. The twelve members of the Joinville Revolutionary Committee took advantage of the anarchy that ruled in 1793 and 1794 to appropriate the castle and murder the residents of the castle.
