Paul André Marie Maistre (born June 20, 1858 in Joinville , † July 25, 1922 in Paris ) was a French officer, most recently Général de division .

Life

Maistre concluded in 1879 the Military School of Saint-Cyr first in its class, and then resigned as Sous-lieutenant in the 60 e régiment d'infantry one. He was promoted to captain in the 76 e régiment d'infanterie in 1887 and to commandant in 1898 . From 1898 to 1903 he taught strategy and tactics in Saint-Cyr. In 1909 he became a colonel and commandant of the 4th e régiment d'infanterie . From 1912 to 1914 he served as Général de brigade in the French General Staff and was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the 4th Army under Fernand Louis Langle de Cary at the beginning of the First World War .

After the Battle of the Marne he was promoted to Général de division and commander of the XXI. Army corps that fought in the Artois until 1916 . In 1916 he was used with his corps in the Battle of Verdun and the Battle of the Somme . In May 1917 he took over command of the 6th Army from Charles Mangin , in which the "Nivelle Offensive" had led to particularly serious mutinies . In October 1917 he led his army in the Battle of Malmaison .

In December 1917, Maistre was ordered to Italy to take over the French 10th Army on the Piave Front. After the start of the German spring offensive on the western front in March 1918, his army was ordered back to France and was used in the defense of the German offensive between Aisne and Marne . On June 10, he was given command of the Groupe d'Armées du Nord - renamed Groupe d'Armées du Center at the beginning of July - with which he took part in the Second Battle of the Marne . Maistre also led the Army Group in the Hundred Days Offensive , which ended with the armistice of November 11th.

In May 1919, Maistre was appointed chairman of the Supreme Defense Committee. From 1921 until shortly before his death he was then Inspector General of the Infantry.
