geography
Ceffonds is located in the sparsely populated southern Champagne , about 25 kilometers southwest of Saint-Dizier , 28 kilometers north of Bar-sur-Aube and eight kilometers south of Lac du Der-Chantecoq , the largest French reservoir. The upper reaches of the Voire and the parallel Ceffondet separate Ceffonds from the small town of Montier-en-Der opposite . Ceffonds is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Montier-en-Der in the northeast, Tilleux and Sommevoire in the southeast, Nully and Soulaines-Dhuys in the south, La Ville-aux-Bois and Louze in the southwest, Longeville-sur-la-Laines in the west and Puellemontier in the north-west.
history
The name of the village goes back to the narrow river of the same name ( le Ceffondet ), which flows into the Voire in Ceffonds. Ceffonds owes its existence to the monks who settled here in the forest of Der from the 7th century. A village called Ceffonds was first mentioned in 1020. The Bishop of Troyes initiated the construction of the first church in Ceffonds from the nearby Montier-en-Der Abbey in 1030, which was consecrated to Saint Remigius . The abbots of the Montier-en-Der monastery were lords of Ceffonds for a long time.
After devastation in the late Middle Ages, the population began to grow slowly as a result of the recruiting of migrants by monks and modest prosperity came from the agricultural yields of the villages of Jagée, Flancourt and La Grève , all of which were part of the Ceffonds parish. The numerous tanneries in Ceffonds were successful, some of which existed until the 19th century. ´ The formerly independent communities Anglus and Sauvage-Magny were incorporated into Ceffonds in 1972.
