The 1119 papal election took place between January 19, 1119 and February 2, 1119, making it the shortest papal election of the 12th century recognized by the Roman Catholic Church .

Pope Gelasius II died in Cluny after he was expelled from Rome by Emperor Heinrich V because of the investiture dispute . It is believed that only four cardinal bishops, four cardinal priests and four cardinal deacons took part in the election, which took place at Cluny Abbey in France. The rest of the college of cardinals remained in Rome. Guy de Bourgogne, who was not previously a cardinal, but Archbishop of Vienne , was elected Pope Calixt II and crowned on February 9, 1119 in Vienne . He arrived in Rome on June 3, 1120.

procedure

At the end of January, the cardinals celebrate the funeral mass of Pope Gelasius II . in Cluny. Those present did not agree on whether they should, as permitted in the papal election decree In Nomine Domini , vote immediately or return to Rome. In the end they went to the election but wanted to present the result to the entire college. The cardinals who accompanied Gelasius II to Cluny are known from the Liber Pontificalis .

Although contemporary accounts differ on many points, they agree that Guy and Pontius de Melgueil were the two candidates. The account of Gaufrid, Prior of Vigois, reports that Gelasius II preferred Pontius. This was the more conciliatory candidate who was able to negotiate a solution to the investiture dispute . The reports by Bernard von Carrion and Geoffroy du Breuil explain the choice of Guy and emphasize the importance of his confrontational attitude towards Henry V, whom he excommunicated , and his family, the Salians .

aftermath

Calixt II went to Sutri , the place of his opponent antipope Gregory VIII , who was recognized by Henry V and besieged the city for eight days until Gregory VIII was handed over to him. Calixt II locked the antipope in the Septasolium in Rome.
