The Ventura Fault (highlighted in red), in Southern California

The Ventura Fault , Ventura Fault  or  Ventura-Pitas Point Fault is a tectonic  fault  in southern California that runs both above and below the sea and  begins near  Santa Barbara . How far it extends is not known, but it is believed that it extends east to  San Bernardino  . It is one of a number of fault lines in the region and is believed to connect to the  San Cayetano Fault , the Lion Fault  and the Pacific Red Mountain Fault  .

Potential for tsunamis

Researchers from the  California Geological Survey , which was formerly the California Division of Mines and Geology  , reported that the fault could create an 8.0-magnitude Richter earthquake, which affects Santa Barbara, Ventura and the United States Santa Monica meanstsunami  . A major earthquake emanates from the fault every 400 to 2400 years. The last one was 800 years ago. At that time, the Pitas Point and Punta Gorda areas were torn from the surf zone and suddenly rose by 16 to 26 feet .
