history

The College of Cardinals had 24 members at the beginning of the conclave. These came from the pontificate:

All the members of the College of Cardinals, 16 French and 8 Italians, took part in the second longest conclave in papal history. It began in Carpentras (France), where the papal court was staying at the time of Pope Clement V's death. Right at the beginning of the conclave, three parties formed under the cardinals. The Italians, who wanted the Pope to return to Rome, the Gascon, who wanted the Pope to stay in France, and the French. The parties looked like this:

  • Gascogner: Arnaud de Falguiéres, Arnaud Daux, Arnaud de Pellegrue, Arnaud Nouvel, Guillaume Teste, Guillaume Godin, Vital du Four, Cardinal Raymond, Raymond Guilhem des Farges and Bernard Jarre.
  • French: Jacques Duése, Berenguer Fredol sen., Berenguer Fredol jun., Guillaume de Mandagot, Nicolas Caignet de Fréauville and Michel de Bec-Crespin.
  • Italians: Niccoló Alberti di Prato, Giacomo Colonna, Napoleone Frangipani Orsini, Pietro Colonna, Guglielmo de Longhi, Giacomo Stefaneschi Caetani, Francesco Caetani and Luca Fieschi dei Conti di Lavagna.

When a fire broke out in Carpentras three months after the beginning of the conclave , the cardinals left the city. The attempt to resume the election was unsuccessful even after several negotiations. It was not until 1315 that the cardinals met again in Lyon, who had been invited there by the French Prince Philip on various pretexts. However, since no one could agree on a candidate, Philip, now King of France, included the cardinals in the Dominican monastery of Lyon. So after another 40 days there was finally an election result.
