Napoleone Orsini

Napoleone Orsini (* 1263 ; † March 23, 1342 in Avignon ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He was born as the son of Rinaldo Orsini, a brother of Pope Nicholas III. born.

From 1280 he studied in Paris. Between 1285 and 1287 Pope Honorius IV appointed him papal chaplain . In the consistory of May 16, 1288, Pope Nicholas IV elevated him to cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry Sant'Adriano .

He took part in the papal election , which lasted from 1292 to 1294 , from which Pope Celestine V emerged ; He also took part in the conclave of 1294 , which Boniface VIII elected Pope. On May 27, 1300 he was appointed legate in the Marche of Ancona , the Duchy of Spoleto and the city of Perugia . He returned to Rome May 28, 1301 to become governor of the Sabina on July 6, 1301 . He also took part in the conclave of 1303 , in which Pope Benedict XI. was elected, as well as at the conclave from 1304 to 1305 , which Pope Clement V elected. Under Clement V he was appointed archpriest of the Vatican Basilica in 1306 . He took part in the conclave 1314-1316 , in which John XXII. was elected Pope. In 1318 he became a cardinal protodeacon . Finally he took part in the conclave of 1334 , which Pope Benedict XII. elected, as cardinal protodeacon he crowned the new Pope on January 8, 1335.

Napoleone Orsini was cardinal for 54 years and participated in the election of seven popes (Celestine V to Clement VI ), of whom he donned tiara at least three . In the election of Clement V and Johannes XXII. he is said to have exercised decisive influence, but he later became an enemy of the latter. He supported the Franciscan spirituals and the interests of Ludwig of Bavaria against the Pope.

Napoleone Orsini died on March 23, 1342 in Avignon and was buried in the Franciscan church there.
