Conclave 1294

The conclave of 1294 took place from December 23 to 24, 1294 . It became necessary after Pope Celestine V had resigned from office ten days earlier.

The election began on December 23, 1294. The cardinals initially elected Cardinal Matteo Rubeo Orsini , who did not accept the election. So the participants in the conclave had to vote again. On Christmas Eve 1294 they finally elected Benedetto Caetani , who had previously been an influential advisor to Coelestin V, in the third ballot . He called himself Pope Boniface VIII.

This conclave is one of the shortest in history.

After the resignation of Coelestin V, there were 22 cardinals, all of whom attended the conclave. Twelve were from Celestine V created , five of Nicholas IV. , Two of Nicholas III. and one cardinal each was created by Urban IV. , Martin IV. and Honorius IV .
