Matteo Rubeo Orsini or Matteo Rosso Orsini (* around 1230 in Rome ; † September 4, 1305 in Perugia ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church from the extensive Orsini family and a nephew of Pope Nicholas III. and the influential Senator Matteo Rosso Orsini , with whom he is sometimes confused.

Life

Pope Urban IV appointed him shortly after his election in May 1262 as cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Portico Octaviae and legates . In 1278 he became archpriest of the Vatican Basilica . After the death of his uncle in 1280, he was the most promising candidate for the papal election . There were violent disputes in the papal election 1280–1281 in Viterbo and thereafter. He and another uncle, Cardinal Giordano Orsini , a brother of Pope Nicholas III, were arrested. Pope Martin IV , who came from France, was reconciled with the Orsini and excommunicated the rebels. From 1287 Matteo Rubeo Orsini was cardinal protodeacon . At the conclave of 1294 he was elected in the first ballot, but rejected it.

He was like his uncle before he was called Nicholas III. Pope became, cardinal protector of the Franciscan order .
